Surface Finish Options for SLA Parts

Unfinished

Dots, or 'standing nibs,' are still visible on the part's underside from the remnants of the support structure. This is suitable when rapid production or cost considerations are priorities.

Natural

Supported surfaces are smoothed by sanding to remove the support nibs.

Standard

Supported surfaces are sanded down, and the entire part is finely blasted to achieve a uniform appearance. However, the layers remain visible.

Custom

Options available include soft-touch paint, clear finishing, painting, masking, color matching, decals/graphics, and textured finishes.

How Does 3D Printing Work?

SLA 3D printing, or stereolithography, is a sophisticated additive manufacturing process that crafts precise, high-resolution parts by curing liquid resin with a UV laser. The procedure starts with a digital 3D model, which is sliced into thin horizontal layers and programmed into the printer. During printing, the machine uses a UV laser beam projected through an optical system to trace and solidify each layer’s shape in a vat of photosensitive resin.

As each layer cures and solidifies, the build platform is incrementally lowered into the resin vat, allowing fresh resin to flow over the surface of the forming part. The laser then cures the next layer, bonding it securely to the previous one. This layer-by-layer approach continues until the entire part is completed.

The uncured resin is then washed away, and the part may undergo post-processing steps like UV-light curing to improve its strength and stability. SLA printing is notable for its ability to produce parts with intricate details and smooth surface finishes, making it ideal for applications that require precision and aesthetics, such as dental work, jewelry, and prototype modeling.
